READING COMPREHENSION
Are celebrities bad for you?

What's wrong with enjoying a bit of celebrity gossip? It doesn't do us any harm ... or does it? Read the article to find out if celebrities really are bad for you.

Celebrities are everywhere nowadays: on TV, in magazines, online. Is this preoccupation with famous people harmless fun or is it bad for us? How many people are truly obsessed with modern media idols? And on the other side of the coin, can fame be harmful to the celebrities?
Studies suggest that the vast majority of teenagers do not really worship celebrities. Researchers have identified three kinds of fans. About 15% of young people have an ‘entertainment-social’ interest. They love chatting about their favourite celebrities with friends and this does not appear to do any harm.
Another 5% feel that they have an ‘intense-personal’ relationship with a celebrity. Sometimes they see them as their soulmate and find that they are often thinking about them, even when they don’t want to. These people are more at risk from depression and anxiety. If girls in this group idolise a female star with a body they consider to be perfect, they are more likely to be unhappy with their own bodies.
That leaves 2% of young people with a ‘borderline-pathological’ interest. They might say, for example, they would spend several thousand pounds on a paper plate the celebrity had used, or that they would do something illegal if the celebrity asked them to. These people are in most danger of being seriously disturbed.
What about the celebrities themselves? A study in the USA tried to measure narcissism or extreme self-centredness, when feelings of worthlessness and invisibility are compensated for by turning into the opposite: excessive showing off. Researchers looked at 200 celebrities, 200 young adults with Masters in Business Administration (a group known for being narcissistic) and a nationally representative sample using the same questionnaire. As was expected, the celebrities were significantly more narcissistic than the MBAs and both groups were a lot more narcissistic than the general population.
Four kinds of celebrity were included in the sample. The most narcissistic were the ones who had become famous through reality TV shows – they scored highest on vanity and willingness to exploit other people. Next came comedians, who scored highest on exhibitionism and feelings of superiority. Then came actors, and the least narcissistic were musicians. One interesting result was that there was no connection between narcissism and the length of time the celebrity had been famous. This means that becoming famous probably did not make the celebrities narcissistic – they already were beforehand.
So, what can we learn from this? People who are very successful or famous tend to be narcissists and are liable to be ruthless, self-seeking workaholics. As we can see from celebrity magazines, they are also often desperate and lonely. They make disastrous role models.

6. Actors were the least self-obsessed group of celebrities.
7. The research concluded that the experience of being a celebrity made people more narcissistic than they were previously.

READING COMPREHENSION:  DREAMS - What are your dreams trying to tell you?

Can you remember a time when you woke up from a fantastic or strange dream? Maybe you were afraid and turned on the light or the dream was so good you wanted to sleep longer. But do you think your dreams are telling you something?

Can you see the future in dreams?

For hundreds of years, people thought dreams were messages from gods or spirits. Today, too, many people can remember a time when they saw a place or person in their dream and then, later, the dream happened in real life. Maybe that’s not surprising because we dream a lot but we probably only remember the times when something happens in a dream and then happens for real. Most people have four to six dreams every night after the age of ten. That’s as many as 2,000 dreams per year. So, an 80-year-old person has probably had 140,000 dreams. Maybe we forget 95–99 per cent of our dreams, but that’s still thousands of dreams that might ‘come true’.

Are dreams recycled thoughts?

Around the 18th and 19th centuries, there were two popular ideas about dreams. One said that the things we see in our dreams are things we keep in our subconscious because we don’t want or need to think about them when we’re awake. The opposite idea said that while we’re sleeping, the brain organises memories and thoughts from the day. Dreams are just random thoughts from our day but we try to make a story from them when we wake up.

Are dreams messages from our brains?

But perhaps both ideas are a little bit right. Maybe dreams are made from the thoughts we have during the day, but we see them as symbols. For example, a dream of flying might be a symbol for an exciting new job. When we’re awake, we think in words most of the time. But when we’re sleeping, the part of our brain that helps us with language sleeps, and the part that makes us happy or sad or angry is awake and busy. So, maybe our thoughts come to us in dreams as feelings and symbols instead of words. If you can understand these symbols, you have a window into your subconscious. If you want to understand the messages, you have to match them to what’s happening in your life.

How can you understand the messages?

One way to help you do this is to keep a dream diary. As soon as you wake up, write down everything you remember about your dreams. Use pen and paper, not your phone or computer because the light might wake you up and you’ll forget faster. Sometimes your eyes will be half-closed and your writing will be difficult to read.
Now you can match your dreams to your daily life. Think about the people and place where the dream happened, as they might mean something too. Also, how you were feeling in the dream is important. If you were afraid instead of happy in the flying dream, maybe it means you are worried about the new job. Are you ready to find out what your subconscious is trying to tell you?
Nicola Prentis

Are the sentences true or false?
1. We don’t know for sure if dreams mean something or not.
2. We forget more dreams than we remember.
3. Dreams speak to us in words and pictures.
4. You can’t learn much from dreams because the things they show are random.
5. It’s a good idea to use a computer to write your dream diary.
6. Every detail of a dream might explain something about how you’re feeling about your life.

writing- oral PROJECT - A PERSON YOU LOOK UP TO (=ADMIRE)

1- PICK UP A PERSON YOU ADMIRE, SOMEBODY WHO HAS DONE SOMETHING POSITIVE FOR HIMSELF/HERSELF AND FOR THE COMMUNITY.
SOMEBODY WHO IS SUCCESSFUL, WHO HAS A GOOD INCOME, A GOOD PROJECT OR PRODUCT THAT FUNCTIONS WELL

2- EXPLAIN IN WRITING:

  • WHO IS THE PERSON
  • WHICH IS HIS/HER ACTIVITY OR PROJECT OR PRODUCT
  • HOW WAS HIS/HER BEGINNING
  • WHAT HE/SHE DID TO ACHIEVE HIS/HER DREAM
  • HOW MUCH TIME HE/SHE TOOK
  • HIS/HER STRATEGIES
  • HIS/HER DIFFICULTIES AT SOME POINT
  • AN ANECDOTE OF HIS/HER LIFE, FAMILY...
  • A CURIOSITY
3- ORAL EXPLANATION.

My example:

- A poor Russian boy who loved reading
- He has developed an application where he summarises books for people in a very short and visual way. FIGHT MEDIOCRITY (youtube) and application
- He started selling all kinds of things for money. After a while he started summarising books completely free in a youtube channel
- He worked very hard and when he had a lot of followers he set up (or started) the app charging money to people
- He took around 5 years (I am not very sure)
- Work hard and for free first and later be paid for his services. Do an excellent job. Give a lot of quality.
- His father criticised him a lot for selling things for money when he was young. The mentality of his family, friends, school, community was communist so not money-oriented or business-oriented.
- His father was a poor man who apparently worked a lot for money.
- He moves to the USA and lives there now. His project is a great success!
